Synadenium grantii 'Rubrum'

Joe:

Oops! Went back to check the web page, and it said, "It grows like a
weed," not weedy. I went to the web because I found Synadenium listed
only in BOTANICA.. No listing in HORTICA. Also, unless Synadenium melts
into the background of the garden, I don't remember ever seeing it. I kept
on surfing and found a message in the Yahoo group "Crown of Thorns," that
made me wonder if I truly have a Synadenium grantii 'Rubrum."

Stephen Jankalski wrote, "First, the plant widely grown as Synadenium
grantii 'Rubrum' is not that species after all. It has a sharply keeled
midvein on the back of the leaves, something the original S. grantii does
not have. Susan Carter (1987,1988) identified the imposter in cultivation
to actually be Synadenium compactum 'Rubrum'...."

He goes on about the name of the plant including the source of his
information. If you're interested I'll send you the message.

The beauiful purple leaves on my plant have a prominent midvein on the
back. I guess that means compactum.
