New Zealand native plants

 I am leaving for New Zealand on January 6, meeting up with a fellow Bay Area
 horticulturalist, Robin Parer of Geraniaceae, to spend two weeks looking at
 New Zealand native plants, and gardens and nurseries which grow natives,
 probably spending most of our time in the North Island, (but willing to go
 South if it would be interesting, and the time is available).
 At present most of the information we have for visiting gardens focuses on
 English style perennial gardens, and nurseries that are growing plant
 material which we have available here. Is there anyone out there with any
 suggestions, places, gardens, nurseries to visit, things to look out for?
 Input would be much appreciated.
