THis discussion about Arbutus just reminded me of something i saw while
in the backroads of Ft. Ord. Among the previously burned Maritime
chapparal ( note, this was in fossilized sand dune area, with what
should be alkaline soil) A ten foot high Arbutus menziesii growing
amongst Pitcher sage, ceanothus and Manzanita. Tgheis this rare? And
was the soil really alkaline? THis was also mainly sand. I know this
was an arbutus because the leaves, the bark and the character is
exactly like other arbutus' ive seen.
