A local college has a Welwitschia specimen in its
teaching collection of primitive plants. Probably a donation from a
plant collector, it had about 18 inches of shredded splendor on each leaf
when I first saw it 20 years ago. A couple of years after that, a
well-meaning student worker "trimmed" it. I think it's made about 6
inches growth since then...
