More Greetings from the Frozen North,
Blood oranges are indeed fascinating, here in Europe they are not
frequently grown, and then mostly on Sicily. This has to do with the fact
that they need warmer temperatures to develop their lovely pigments.
As a matter of fact, I think the popularity of the blood orange is in
decline, and I do hope I am wrong.
Popular variety is the Moro.
For those living in colder climates, it is quite possible to successfully
grow citrus in containers and have some fruit to show for it. My sour
orange which is still a small tree, regularly has some twenty odd oranges
in each crop. I use them when I make English Orange marmalade.....half sour
oranges, half thinskinned blood oranges, alas not homegrown!
Tastes wonderful!
