I can see everyone is having a lot of fun - seems we've discovered an
underutilized aspect of this forum!!
Nick - your remark about the Buddleia reminded me of a species I have
growing down at my son's school plantings. I received it as a 'cutting'
(actually a sample flower spike brought into a horticultural meeting)
years ago, and now, after languishing on the back of my propagation
table under my expert care(!?), it is growning well in the ground and
about to flower. I believe the species is B. madagascariensis, and
the flowers are (soon to be) yellow in open paniculate spikes. The
foliage is handsomely tomentose on the undersides of the leaves and on
the stems. But the real treat is that the flower smell like someone's
old GYM SOCKS!! Literally! I was enchanted by the beauty of the
flowers when I first saw them, but this 'extra bonus' was irresistable!
We'll see what the parents and school children think when it starts to
open its flowers! Perhaps this is an appropriate combination with the
schemes being discussed - I'll report of what type of insect pollinator
it might attract!
An amusing holiday to everyone!
