What about Devil's Club, Echinopanax horridum?  While not likely to overwhelm
it's neighbors, it would certainly be a worthwhile addition to anyone's garden
of nasty plants.  I first encountered this plant in Kodiak, Alaska, over 20
years ago, and the memory of that exhilarating zing is just as fresh as if it
happened yesterday!  It lives up to its name.  Since it's a native of the
Pacific northwest, it should do well in New Zealand and Tasmania.
