What to mix up with Rhodos

Dear Medit Planters,

I'm currently working on a series of cuboid pots (1 ft. lenght by 1 ft.
whidth) to be set on a parapet of a balcony which is shaded let's say
till 4 or 5 PM.
The plants should provide a sort of barrier from neighbours'inquisitive
glances, as well as some flowers to enlivend the sight from inside the
bedroom.
The use of some Rhododendrons crossed my mind but I think I'd better
find at least a couple of other species able to cope with Rhodos, in
order not to be monothematic.
The plants should be hardy, growing about at the same rate as Rhodos and
preferibly acidic tollerant.
I know there's plenty of flowering species that could fit the case
(Azalea Mollis just to mention one) but I'm not sure at all about the
aesthetic effect of any of them.
Consider that it's not a garden, and plants are going to be set on a row
and to be seen, mainly from the front side and from a height about of a
windowsill.
Any hints will be greatly appreciated. Sorry about my poor English and
many lovely thanks to all the 'kind souls' who will answer to me.

My best regards to all of you.
