The fragrance of Kool Aid/Concord Grapes/Bubblegum
seems to be a fairly common fragrance for many plants.
Another plant with this peculiar scent is the
Australian Pea/Dipogon lignosus, which is not actually
australian. This one is a rampant grower in cooler
maritime mediterannean climates, and is great for
covering up eyesores/old stumps, cyclone fences, etc.
The vine can bloom sporadically all year long, and
will also self seed in irrigated landscapes. The
flowers resemble a classic lavender purple sweet pea,
and can completely cover the vine with flowers spring
through fall. The seed pods will explode on warm
summer days and fling the seeds all over the place. I
have never seen this growing in the wild, so I don't
think it is weedy here in California, but it may be a
problem in Australia? as so many South African plants
can sometimes be... It has not really been a problem
to keep this one under control in my garden, except to
keep it whacked back occasionally when it gets larger
than I want it.
