was bougainvillea on wall/palm trees?

Hi,

Many thanks to all who gave suggestions and warnings regarding the
bougainvillea. Hmm, the references to body piercing, floppy
groundcovers and constant pruning makes me think that growing a
bougainvillea would not be such a wise idea.
Well, so much for landscaping books. Those gardens must be maintained by
an army of gardeners.

The wall of the house that I wanted to decorate is
next to the driveway of my neighbor. It is a plain south facing wall
and with the second story addition, I am afraid it will be a much bigger
plain wall. Currently there are large shrubs
that have to be constantly hacked back because a) my neighbor needs to get
out of
his car and b) the shrubs have been planted directly under our windows.
So I thought a colorful vine going up the side of the house would be the
ideal solution to tart up that side of the house while still allowing the
neighbors access to their driveway. but not bougainvillea it seems.

maybe this is another equally bad idea, but what do people think of palm
trees instead? They are tall and narrow, very shapely. Would it be a
lousy idea to plant them so close to the foundation of a house?

It has been unseasonably warm in Los Angeles and while it is still only
February, I have started to think of tropicals.
