I grow Skylark here in southern France, the Languedoc, and it remains quite a compact shrub. Mine is about 1m20 tall and 80cm spread after five years. It flowers later than cvs such as Concha etc, in late May/early June. It has stood up to plenty of cold winters (-7°C tonight for example) but also to temps of 35+ and rarely to 40°C+ in the summer. It has no regular water but does benefit from the fact that I very occasionally water plants about 2m away during July & Aug. I even had the cheek to tranplant it once without problems, and I find Ceanothus difficult to transplant.

I'd love to grow ceanothus in my small garden but most cultivars appear to be too wide. Sunset does list C. Thyrsiflorus "Skylark" as being 3-6 ft. tall, 5 ft. wide. Have any of you had experience with this plant or any other small ceanothus? Any planting/care advice? Thanks! Caroline Santa Barbara, California Sunset zone 24
