Re: considering closing this listserv

My sentiments exactly Dana.  It would be excellent if it could be revived;  FB is too ephemeral for the kind of discussions you are talking about.  Sean was always such a motivating force on the listserv, it seems to me you need somebody like him to expand the exchanges.

I’ve been a member for many years and would love to see the list become more active again.  I rarely use FB because I find it too distracting and I agree that it is mostly just nice pictures.  The listserv is a much better way to have in-depth discussions.  Is there another place for good discussions if the listserv is discontinued?

It was done to use because of a change in the listserv service at UC Davis.  Under that old listserv protocol (now upgraded to another), there were reason why 'reply-all' was problematic as I recall.  I have not looked at how to change the group to 'reply-all' under the new listserv.

What was the reason for changing to reply to individual only?  Was it a preference of the group at the time? Or something to do with the listserv?

It seems to me that everyone now-a-days are used to groups to which the messages go to the whole group. Perhaps if that were changed (if possible) the group might take off again.

On the other hand, these kinds of groups seems to losing some of their oomph.  I read just the other day that the huge IMDb (International Movie Database) is removing its message boards, citing that readership on them is way down yet FB and other social media use is more lively.

I had forgotten about "Reply All". Here's an email I sent earlier "Reply"

Dear Sean

Thank you for writing. I seem to have less and less time to look at this
sort of blog nowadays. I wonder why it is and suspect it's because I am
doing everything more slowly but there is still so much to do each day!

Looking at the blog just now I was fascinated by the Angioplasty item,
delighted to see the praise you received for the 2008 Monterey logo (I also
loved that design and still have my bag), and it's all very interesting.

But it's up to you whether you keep it open. I'd have thought I would go
back to it again if it remains, but it's your creation and if it makes work
or costs you money then don't bother if there is no activity.

If you are interested do have a look at Mediterranean Plants and Gardens
website. www.medpag.org

Thank you again for asking everyone.

All the best
Heather

Activity began to diminish as soon as the list was changed so that a "Reply"
went only to the person who posted the message, not to the list as a whole.

I had to remember to "Reply All" so this message could get to everybody, but
very few people seemed to know about "Reply All", so lively discussions
ceased.

Can we try it again for a while so that a simple "Reply" will be sent to the
whole list?
