South of France

Hello

I'm new on Medit-Plants. I'm from South of France (sorry for the french
accent). I'm leaving in a couple of weeks for a botanical trip in Crete.
Does anyone has some advice for me on good places to see, plants, gardens,
botanists to meet ?

I already grow some nice plants from Crete (Sarcopoterium spinosum is one
of my favourites) and I'm looking for some new plants, especially Cistus
natural hybrids and other low compact shrubs suitable for alcaline soil.
Are there other Cistus enthusiasts on Medit-Plants ? I have a collection of
nearly 100 different Cistus species, natural hybrids and cultivars. The
last one I found, while exploring the "garrigue" near where I live, is
Cistus x costei, hybrid between C. laurifolius and C. salviifolius. Just
imagine a perfect round bush, very neat, with nice glossy leaves, and pure
white flowers... I'm still looking for the mythical hybrid between C.
albidus and C. monspeliensis (all those who know South of France know just
how common both of these are, but the hybrid is very, very rare).

Is there a seed exchange system on Medit-Plants ? I'm looking for Buddleia
marrubifolia, which I lost during the very rainy 95 autumn. Does someone
know of a good seed nursery specialized in California and Arizona natives
which ships to Europe ? For those who like South-African plants (I was in
South-Africa last autumn, wonderful experience !) I recommend Siverhill
Seeds, they have a good catalogue and are very efficient. I collect quite a
lot of seeds myself, and would be happy to exchange.

Here in South of France we've had a cold winter : -8 °C on December 31st.
Just enough to remember that mediterranean climat is not subtropical, as we
all would sometimes like to beleive. But now spring is not far away, my
Iris unguicularis is in full bloom, and Clematis armandii is about to open
its first flowers...
