I suspect that maybe there is a broken water pipe to blame?
I have come across this phenomenon before, out in the sticks miles from
anywhere (200 km North East of Perth, Western Australia) I found a
little swamp in the middle of a bone dry area on the side of a hill.
There was a loverly crop of weeds growing happily!
When I looked closer you could just seed a small upwelling of water in
the middle of this wet patch. I dug down into the middle and water just
poured up! the further I dug the more violent the water gushed untill at
about 40-50 cm's down a thin stream of water shot straight up at me
reaching about 4-5 metres high. I found the pipe pretty quickly after
that!
The owner of the pipeline had suspected a leak since he noticed his
pressure had dropped but hadn't found the leak despite looking for some
months, not suprising as the pipline ran for many kilometres and passed
through some pretty rough ground. I'm certainly glad I didn't put it
down.
