Hello.
Probably beginning to sound like we're getting off the Mediterranean
theme with the seed exchange stuff???
On the subject, I had a "wish list" posted in Omnihort for a while that
included Molucella spinosa, "the *other* Bells of Ireland* (M. laevis)
that produced no results.
(It also included a yellow flowered form of Nepeta subsessilis, and if
you've seen one of those *running around*, Please Do let me know? --ie,
has that even been introduced to cultivation yet?)
As popular as as novel as M. laevis is, I can't help but be fascinated
by M. spinosa, being larger, white-flowered, and frustratingly elusive.
A site I've seen recently on plants of Spain includes this, but even the
authority responsible does not seem to be able to pin down the location
of any plants.
It's supposed to grow in ditches, if I remember right in the Molluga
province of Spain from where Molucella actually gets it name rather than
the Moluccas? (I have a feeling my spellings here are atrociously wrong,
alas, my reference works are collectively Not in hand at the moment...)
At any rate, I'm happy to bring this one to anyone's attention who was
not aware of it, it can be found in Polunin's work, for example
If anyone knows anything about it's location, cultivation, availability,
etc, or, well, has anyone ever even seen one??? I'd be Most delighted to
hear more! (no RBGE accession # last I checked, etc...)
(I am of course somewhat biased, I am quite convinced that virtually
everyone needs to be growing this! :-))
Thanks!
