Ten years ago a friend traveling in Greece gathered seeds of a lovely red
poppy growing on the Isle of Rhodes. Thankfully, she shared them with me.
Living in San Diego, California, a very mediterranean climate, I find they do
extraordinarily well here. I have shared them with many who also commend the
deeply saturated red color against the black center. They simply glow in the
light of our mediterranean sky.
Can anyone confirm the word I have from another friend that these grow wild on
the hillsides on the Isle of Rhodes in the spring? I am assuming Papaver
rhoeas? Anything more specific? Any anecdotal information you can share with
me would be appreciated. My native plant sensibilities limit my desire to be
the Miss Rumphius of my neighborhood. (Refer to the children's book Miss
Rumphius by Barbara Cooney).
