Hitchcock, in THE FLORA OF THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST, goes a bit further,
"Lasthenia, a courtesan who was a student of Plato, of no obvious
application".
I doubt that Tim Longville's suggestion that this is passing as just
another yellow composite inspired the dubbing, though.
The genus is known collectively, and justifiably as "goldfields", often
carpeting large swaths of ground with gold in early spring. One Lasthenia
is insignificant, but 100 million of them on a hillside are impressive!
