RE: wild boars in the garden

Francisco please be aware that electric fences are designed for various uses
and a fence that works well for cattle will not work for sheep or goats.
The same goes for pigs, boar , elephants etc all need to be designed with
the beast in mind.

Browseing or grazing animals with big juicy wet noses like cattle will baulk
at going anywhere near a relatively low voltage fence and you can get away
with low tension 'tape' electric fences.
Goats on the other hand tolerate much higher shocks as they don't have such
a juicy nose and will push the fence more so need more tension and real
wire.

A plant pathologist I met in Rome who has a farm in Africa told me a great
story about African bush pigs, these are real big pigs! They know the
fences give a blast of a shock and it hurts bad, but does that stop them?
Nope. He described these huge pigs backing away then launching themselves
at the fence squealing at the top of there lungs (before they hit the
fence). Of course electric fences aren't really made to take this sort of
onslaught and once that first martyr is through the rest obligingly follow.

He also had a very amusing story about electric fences and elephants but
another day.

Moral is make sure your money is spent on a fence designed for pigs.

Personally I know of no method other than '6' traps as a non toxic method
for controlling pigs and you've still got the problem of disposing of a very
agro pig afterwards. You could try just sitting up at night with real noise
making equipment and scare them off when they come in, they are very shy
animals and they may leave you alone for a while after a few nights of being
scared off.
Does nothing for you sleep though.

Cheers, Rod
