	While reading this contribution it suddenly occurred to me 
that lights might give some protection. Use one (or more) motion 
sensor lights. Perhaps this might ten to scare them off. You could 
probably adapt one of them to turn on a growl or a bark as well. This 
might scare them off and let you sleep!  --Chas--
