Although I quite often show my organic veg garden to special groups, I
have only once opened my entire garden in support of some charity.
I know how you feel about the failings of your garden. It is exactly the
same as most people feel before hosting a special group of guests in
the home, all the trouble spots seem to stand right out.
In fact it is more than likely your visitors will see none of the
eyesores which stand out for you. They will be concentrating on just the
best things, the prettiest flowers, the most attractive groupings and
views, and the handsomest trees and shrubs. Everything else will just
fade into the background (especially if you can stop yourself calling
any attention to it!!) The only gardens where I have been really aware
by weeds for instance were ones I was scrutinizing while judging garden
competitions and there I really had to concentrate on looking.
>From numerous gardens I have visited for pleasure myself, the ones where
the owner took the trouble to be available to answer questions really
stand out, so it is well worth being around during the visit as far as
you can. Human nature being what it is, this will also avoid most of the
attentions of the compulsive collector who finds it difficult to keep
their hands to themselves. Even apparently nice and honest people can
easily be tempted if left on their own in a garden full of treasures.
So enjoy showing your garden and don't worry too much about the fine
details, I am sure you will gets lots of praise and appreciation for
your efforts.
