Well, for drilling, you might want to find a bit used for drilling holes
in concrete (I think they are tipped with carborundum).
However, I usually chip bits off of the bottom of a pot until you get
half way down, and then when I get too frustrated with that :), I tap with
the hammer until a piece chips off (a low cone shaped chip usually comes
off on the other side of the pot bottom) . I've never split a pot before
(terracotta, or regular white ceramic).
