Container plants -- slightly OT

Here's a slightly OT question for you all -- I picked up some nice thrown
pots recently and want to drill them for planting.  Any suggestions as to
kind of drill, whether you start drilling from the unglazed underside or
glazed inside?  Any other suggestions so I don't crack them while I am
drilling them?
