Dear Natale,
I've seen people here try to grow grave vines in containers but generally it has not been very satisfactory because the rates of evaporation and transpiration are so high during the hot summers that the plants and the potting soils just can't get or hold enough water to replace the water lost each day. The result is all too often crisped browned foliage and stunted growth too small to cover a pergola.
Now in Northern Italy, where summers are milder, and the air has more moisture, and there are some summer rains your client could, with attentive watering - almost daily I suspect, manager to grow grape vines in pots to cover a pergola. Would they fruit? I couldn't say.
The pots would need to be as large as possible. Will his roof hold the weight? This is a very important consideration as large pots filled with damp soil are extremely heavy. It would be disastrous if the roof garden caused the roof to collapse; imagine the mess in his Grand Salon!
With generous, regular feeding to sustain vigorous growth and a steady water supply a vine planted in a large pot, or tub - say the size of a lemon tree pots could be effective.
