This probably isnt much help but your question reminds me of a project I
started some years ago and for one reason or another didnt finsh, but I
think it would work. According to The Encyclopaedia of Gardening circa
1888, vines can be and were grown and fruited in pots. "The best
varieties are the free bearing kinds such as ---- Black Hamburgh, ----
Royal Muscadine ----". It advises liberal pot room should be provided,
and that as soon as it is discovered that the roots have reached the bottom
or sides they should be potted on but it says that a 12" pot should be
large enough for all practical purposes. Abundance of water at all times
and syringing beneficial. Obviously there are several pages of
instruction I cant relay, but it sounds possible to grow the vine -
fruiting it would be quite a lot of work though. I also seem to remember
reading of them being pruned as standards and used as table decoration when
fruiting.
