I have Eriostemon growing on a clay embankment with sandstone close below. 
It also has competion from mature stringy bark roots.  I do not water it and
I have no summer rainfall.  Yes I do tip prune it for a compact shape.  It has
morning sun only. For me, one of the best plants for a really difficult situation.
