David, et. al.:
Here's my recollections, for what they're worth...
I've heard, in conversation, about the existence of
Bolusanthus, a "collector's item"; read "not in the
trade".
In Southern California, some wholesalers still offer
Tabebuia chrysotricha and T. impetiginosa. No T.
caraiba(syn argentea).
Cassia fistula was one of many Cassias that have been
tried numerous times in S. Cal. The L.A. Arboretum
was big on Cassias 30 years ago and tried hard to
market them. C. fistula was not one of the better
ones (needs more heat?). In fact, almost none of the
arborescent Cassias were the "better ones". Cassia
leptophylla is seeing a resurgence, though, as a
street tree, especially in Santa Barbara.
Someone also had asked about Delonix regia in So. Cal.
I've seen one or two decent-sized "trees" but never
one in bloom and never one that developed a bole
worthy of a mature tree. One cold winter and, poof,
all gone.
The recent cold-weather news underscores the
difference between Zone 10 (11?) of Florida and Zone
10 of California. Key West recently set a record
January LOW of 54! When I lived in San Diego, a
"freak frost" every 5-10 years was expected.
