David -
my copy of Plants of the Cape Flora, a Descriptive Catalogue, by Pauline
Bond and Peter Goldblatt, lists both P. pubescens and P. plumosa, sharing
the common name of veerkoppie, but the former listed as being called
featherhead as well. It would seem that they are similar species (this
text list 150 species of Phylica, no other species showing the common name
of veerkoppie) - here are the differences:
Phylica plumosa
veerkoppie
3m high, feathery golden foliage, yellow flowers; the lower slopes and
flats of Clanwilliam to Peninsula, Caledon, Worcester, Montagu.
Phylica pubescens
veerkoppie, featherhead, flannelbush, (green phylica?)
1.5m high, feather (green?) foliage, white flowers; Worcester, Stellenbosh,
Pennisula to Riversdale.
I'll have to research these place names to know if they overlap or are very
close (they sound like they are mostly separate areas that perhaps 'touch'
each other). Unfortunately, this text does not provide any cultural
information.
So, sound like the golden feathery thing we've seen a lot of 'round here is
probably indeed P. plumosa.
