Just as well that I did not know about its requirement of a free-draining
acid/peaty soil. My soil is a decent clay loam, a bit sticky in places and
definitely not acid. The plant took to it happily and has never shown signs
of any problems.
Moira - you said that your plant was shortlived. Considering its fast
growth I can imagine that it might not live that long. Mine is now 5 years
old and while looking mature, it does not show any signs of decline. How
long did yours live?
Finally, having sown seed from several sources, some of it certainly fresh,
I am baffled by Paul Trownson's statement: "I just sow them." Sigh.
Myself, I may have to pull out the old burning pine needle trick.
Thank you for the helpful comments from all of you.
