California(n) Gardens!

Thanks to Bill and Bracey for comments on the Judith Taylor book (and to Bill for attempting to educate me in the way Californians use California and Californian!). It sounds from what they say as though the book is something of, to use Bill's word, a patchwork. More 'anecdotal' than 'substantial,' perhaps? Useful background, useful bibs and bobs, but not perhaps 'essential'? (Particularly if you're several thousand miles away and reading for general rather than immediate interest!) Fair summary? (Victoria Padilla still the best single-volume bet, for Southern Cal, at least?)
