I have two Fremontodendron planted in the back garden.
Both are a few years old and about 10 feet high. We
had a very strong storm on New Year's Day which had
winds of 30 MPH with gusts close to 50 MPH. I don't
have any trees in the yard, but one of the
Fremontodendron turned into a sail and tipped over.
When I went out to look at the damage, it appeared
that the plant had wrapped its roots around to one
side and was lacking any sort of anchor on the side
away from the lean.
I'm wondering if there's any way to save it, since
it's a very nice specimen, and it's not been ripped
out of the ground. Is it possible to initiate roots on
the side where the roots are wrapped around, or will I
need to stake it for several years?*
*I understand these are short lived plants, but it was
growing so very nicely! It seems these are not very
deep rooted when new and several others about the same
age around town also tipped over.
