Cyndi--

When I was trying to organize a street-tree planting for my neighborhood in
San Francisco I got a pile of materials from Friends of the Urban Forest,
including a booklet entitled "Trees for San Francisco: A guide to
street-tree planting and care." Unfortunately, as far as I know this
excellent and useful booklet is not for sale.

However, I will list the recommended species and cultivars here for
everyone. All have been grown as street trees for a number of years and
found to stand up to pollution and not heave pavement (though a few need
root barriers). Most do not require additional water after their third year
in place. If you want additional information about any of them let me know
and I will type out what the booklet says. Oh, and Sunset doesn't agree
about some of them being suitable for zone 17, but there you go.
