Western Garden book sez:
"Cut back tops hard at planting. As tree grows, prune lightly each winter,
cutting out dead wood, crossing branches, low-hanging branches that interfere
with traffic. Pinch back runaway shoots any season."
But you may want to wait a bit if there is dead wood from freeze damage, just
to see what's really dead and to avoid stress. Hope this helps.
