I see more outrages committed against Fruitless Mulberry than perhaps any
other tree. What's up with that? It wouldn't be so bad if they were artfully
pollarded like the plane trees of Europe, but they are almost always butchered
unmercifully. I have a neighbor who, I swear, prunes all his trees with a
dull hatchet! No regard for form, health of the tree, anything other than to
discourage the poor things from growing, apparently. Why not just rip them
out and be done with it? My other big pet peeve is a garden of shrubs of a
variety of species trimmed into uniform "muffins." Californians never seem to
tire of that look. Then there are those lovely gardens of red lava rock and
white gypsum arranged in geometric patterns...
