tour to the Canary Islands this spring

There is apparently still space left in this tour:

The Canaries & Southern Spain
with Dr. Robert Haller and Richard G Turner Jr
April 24 - May 11, 1999

Scheduled for the peak of Spring, the tour will include seven days in the
Canary Islands, six days in Southern Spain. The tour will feature public
and private gardens along with excursions to discover the unique native
floras and spectacular scenery of this region. Bob Haller, the Botanic
Garden's travel botanist, and Richard Turner, Jr., Pacific Horticulture's
editor, will escort the group, and they will be joined by local guides to
aid in interpreting the natural and garden history of the areas to be visited.

The Canary Islands lie scattered in the Atlantic Ocean off the northwest
coast of Africa. Although a part of Spain, the islands have a unique
culture, landscape and flora. The tour will cover four of these islands and
participants will encounter environments ranging from lush cloud forests to
stark semi-deserts.

The special of the Canary Islands makes them one of the world's top
botanical "hot spots." Many of the plants grow naturally only on the
islands, and many of these are rare and endangered.

Canarian plants such as the Dragon Tree, Canary Island Pine, Canary Island
Palm, Pride of Madeira, and numerous succulents (e.g., Aeonium, Sedum, and
Euphorbia) have been brought to Mediterranean-style gardens all over the
world. From the Canaries, participants will fly to the Spanish mainland,
beginning with two nights in Granada, with its outstanding examples of
Moorish architecture and gardens, including the famous Alhambra and
Generalife.

The route then leads west, with two nights in the picturesque mountain town
of Ronda, surrounded by spectacular scenery and beautiful wildflower
displays.

The main tour will end grandly in Seville with a stroll through the Alcazar
Palace and Gardens, and the lush public spaces of Maria Luisa Park.
