Hi, Trevor -my experience comes from observation, I've never grown
Pancratium but they grow wild on the beaches here. I noticed most of the
times the bulb is half out of the sand and it thrives in these condition. I
guess it needs very high drainage and baking conditions in the summer- the
sand becomes really burning in July and August and that's when they store
energy. I don't think it needs to make a packed clump to bloom, at least the
wild ones don't seem to be clump forming - instead, the bulb becomes bigger
and bigger - but it remains single, on the beach, though its offsets can be
a few inches away. I remember there used to be a single bulb in Ninfa
gardens that had been planted half out of the soil, and it bloomed
profusely - of course, there it was necessary to avoid water logging. Hope
this helps.
Oh, BTW -we call them Giglio marittimo, that would read as sea LILY. If you
had not used the botanical name, I would never have guessed what you were
talking about. This is to thank all the members of the list who care about
us, non-mother-tongues, who struggle to follow your cryptic conversation
when you come out with opinions like "I hate Kikuyu". WHAT is kikuyu, has it
ever been studied and classified by a botanist and given an INTERNATIONAL
(call it botanical or latin) name, so that others could share your points of
view and experience?
Can you imagine what it is to stand up from this keyboard, look for the
vocabulary and try to find what you are talking about? I think we all had
our difficulties at the beginning, with Latin names, but they make these
conversations possible! I already have enough difficulties in converting
your F temperatures in C, and your inches, yards, miles, gallons etc. in our
European corrensponding measures. So thank you dearly for using always latin
names.
