What is the deal with lantana (L. montevidensis or sellowiana?)?? I
drive around Napa and see lovely profusions of the stuff massed around
foundations, banked against fences, spilling over retainer walls, etc.
It blooms and blooms, despite intense reflected heat, and apparent
neglect. It never appears to need coddling or special growing
conditions. I thought it would be an easy way to get alot of background
color against my fence. And I wanted a profusion of the white-flowering
kind to cover the bare lower part of my trellis full of Heavenly Blue
morning glories. So I planted several of the purple-flowering variety
and several of the white-flowering, and one yellow. They never really
took off. They spread just a bit, quite leggy-looking, produced a few
blooms, and then appeared to die off, leaving a few spindly, woody
stems. I have heavy clay soil that I keep adding compost to. All the
lantana I planted got frequent light watering--maybe that's the
problem? Any suggestions? Thanks. Wendy
