My eye was caught by the latest weekly crop report from the
Fresno (Calif.) County Dept. of Agriculture. Fresno County
has the highest agricultural income of any county in the U.S.
(cotton and grapes, mostly), but the array of crops grown
commercially is amazing.
Being harvested this week: Asian pears, several varieties of
summer peaches, plums, and necarines; Valencia oranges for
export; grapes: Flame Seedless, Black Emerald, Perlette, Black
Corinth, Thompson Seedless.
Field crops: cantaloupe, basil, bok choy, beets, bittermelon
leaves, bittermelon, carrots, Swiss chard, chives, cilantro,
cucumbers, sweet corn, dill, yellow, green, and long beans,
eggplant, gailon, gai choy, garlic, mustard greens, green
onions, honeydew melons, kohlrabi, lemon grass, moqua, mint,
mixed melons, ong choy, okra leaf, okra, onions, opo, parsley,
bell, sweet, and chili peppers, spinach, tomatoes, tatsoi,
watermelon and yam leaves.
We have great farmers' markets around here!
