Hi Wendy,
Your little "September weed" sounds like Aster ericoides as that is the
small flowered aster with pinky-lavender flowers. What is called "September
weed" by Southern Calif. cut flower growers is usually the white flowered
Aster pringlei 'Monte Casino'.
Both are easy to grow in your own garden. Available from several mail order
nurseries. One of my favorites:
