Re: Flavorful fruit

Ben, there really aren't too many varieties of pineapple guava to choose from.  They all seem to do great.  I have at least six plants and they more seem to respond to how much water they get and the weather, there doesnt appear to be much difference in terms of plant appearance, fruit size or flavor.  And all ripen at the end of summer/early fall.

There are lots of varieties of Pomegranate.  Bracey is correct that Wonderful is the most popular, but in my book, it isnt all that wonderful.

There are tons of varieties to choose from and since you have little kids, you might want a white pomegranate.  Not that whites are truly white but they tend to be shades of pale pink to peach and the seeds inside are pale as well  - which translates to LESS MESS when kids (big or small) eat them.

White pomegranates seeds are typically less astringent too and they dont have as much pith so you can eat the seeds whole rather than spit them out (and advantage to some folks, a disappointment to others).

If you have a friend who has a pomegranate you like, ask them for some cuttings when they are dormant.  They are surprisingly easy to start from cuttings (as are figs).  Otherwise, as Bracey suggested, Dave Wilson has a good selection.  Or if you haven't already connected with California Rare Fruit Growers in your area, you might want to do so and find out who their pomegranate guru is - he or she may have some interesting varieties to share.

Hi All,
I'm thinking of planting a couple of Pineapple Guavas (Feijoa sellowiana, syn. Acca sellowiana) and a Pomegranate, for fruit as well as for looks.  Can anyone recommend varieties of either that bear especially tasty fruit?
