Moira -
Many roses do beautifully, particularly the old Ayrshire ones.
So, perhaps oddly, do many irises.
So, even more oddly, do poppies. (The garden has significant
collections of both. The two owners, him and her, are Serious
Collectors by nature!)
So do oaks and acers.
Tropaeolums romp away like weeds - the chap there used to have the
National Collection (though I confess the more tender ones were grown
in the greenhouse).
Meconopsis ditto. (Even though this garden is on poor shallow soil
which drains in an eye-blink, I guess what soil there is is
sufficiently acid - and certainly they get enough rain....: and of
course the cool summers suit them.)
To give an idea of the conditions: the garden's on a steep hillside
and is walled at the top end to a height of around 8 ft. Most winters
the snow comes right over the wall in a tidal wave and smothers that
section of the garden. This year it not only came over, it didn't
shift until early in May.
Still, on the basis that there's always someone worse off, that's
nothing compared to Northern Michigan! And, as the lass there said to
me yesterday, the one, brief, overwhelming rush of bloom produced by
their concertina-ed season does have its own form of beauty.
Best wishes -
Tim
