Vireya Display Garden & Garden Ramblings

Dear Friends,
I have just joined the council of Cal Hort, the oldest and most prestigious
horticultural association in the SF Bay Area. Further I've been asked to
write a monthly column which I've decided to call "Garden Ramblings" though it is quite impossible to do that in my real garden. My first column (very brief)
is on an important new palm for medit-planters, CHAMAEDOREA plumosa (see
attached. I'm working on my next one which is on the new vireya rhododendron
disdplay garden which Bill Moyles has created in the lath house at Lakeside
Park Gdn Ctr at Oakland's Lake Merit. It's very young and nonetheless very
worth seeing. I'm researching now but think it's open weekdays from 10AM-2PM.
It's going to be a sensation!

Cal Chapter of ARS is now embroiled in fighting a name change. After 55 years
our "foreign" chapters are growing by leaps and bounds but our native chapters
are contracting. This has led to the suggested change to The Internation
Rhododendron Society--can you believe, IRS! Harold Greer who almost fainted
has suggested Azalea and Rhododendron Society so our anagram could survive.
I feel if 500 Danes don't want to be a chapter of the ARS let them choose their
own name. The Californians are quite content. Hope you'll like the columns and join us at Cal Hort.
