I concur with Gary Matson's suggestions —Zauschneria/Epilobium and
Helianthus maximillian. With the latter, it's recommended that you set a
tomato cage over the plant in spring. It gets tall and needs support to
keep erect.
If you'd like to try some late-blooming salvias, try:
• Salvia involucrata — gorgeous rose-pink blooms on a 4'x4' shrub.
• Salvia X "Indigo Spires" — Gets up to 5' tall and blooms in early
summer through frost, with long wands on dark purple flowers. A
show-stopper.
These salvias need moderate irrigation here (very dry), but on the
coast, I think they might do fine with little irrigation, once
established.
Also, Rudbeckia hirta "Indian Summer" is a spectacular yellow daisy that
blooms until frost here. Needs only moderate water. It's shortt-lived,
but re-seeds readily. You might look into some of the late-blooming
asters, but they probably need moderate irrigation.
