Dear Cali,
I know how painful it is! I remember what Tuscany looked like some years
ago...and travelling in Greece in the last few years I noticed how bad the
situation is there as well.
Good advice to cut and burn. I remember in Ninfa years ago the then owner, a
Lady, managed to save many plants spraying them completely (roots to tip)
every winter with a very thick bordeaux mixture. All plants were blue for
the whole year, but it worked. They tell me there are other fungicides now
that work, if they are carefully and repeatedly sprayed.
However, it is much better to plant resistant clones.
Many clones were selected that proved to be immune to canker. The most
common is Bolgheri (TM), but there are others, normally indicated with
numbers and letters, which I can't remember now. When you purchase the
plants, they MUST have a certifying tab that guarantees the clone. They are
producted only in two or three big nurseries in Tuscany, all around the
area of the city Pistoia, under the auspicies of the SAF (The agency for
forestry). These nurseries then send to retailers. Be warned: they are more
expensive than the averag Cupr. sempervirens or C.s."Stricta". But they
survive unharmed.
Now, considering you are in Corfu, I thought you could try with nurseries in
Puglia, the Italian region facing you just accross the sea. Unfortunately, I
made some telephone calls for you, and could not find any place that has the
plants. Therefore, I have to send you to nurseries further North. One is
Torsanlorenzo, here, near Rome. Tel. number: 06-91010972. They send plants
everywhere, but I think they require a minimum number of plants ordered. It
is worth trying though. The second one is a little further, Vivai
dell'Uccellina (tel. 0564-407007) and you should speak with signor Enrico
Pratesi. For both places, be ready to specify the height of the plants you
want.
If you don't have to purchase big numbers, perhaps it would be worth coming
here yourself.

I don't know about websites for information, but I will try to find something.

Do keep me posted, and let me know if you need help!

Alessandra.
