Lychees in Northern California

I've eaten lychee fruit throughout Southeast Asia, purchasing it in
the markets. My assumption is that it needs warmth, year-round water,
and a great deal of humidity. Am I wrong about this? Would the trees
grow here in the San Francisco Bay Area and would they fruit?.

I'm not sure of the correct genus and species, it may be Lychee
chinensis. The fruit are found inside brown, dry pods and one would
assume in looking at the pods that inside you'd find a hard and dry
nut. But when you scrape the pod off you find this wonderful glowing
white fruit. They are round, about one inch in diameter. Canned forms
are available in Asian speciality markets; they are used in deserts.

Thanks,
