The most horrendous thing I ever opened a can to find (though I suppose
Pork Brains in Gravy might possibly rank right up there) was "pickled
eggplant" from some arabic country - off the shelf at a local international
foods store.
RED!!!! About the size of a fresh fig squeezed to half the diameter and
twice the height. Nondescript flavor, hardly inedible but not what I'd call
pickled. Saturated with goddess knows what evil coal tar dye that left a
semi-permanent stain on everything it touched including stainless steel:
lobbing a canful of these into a swimming pool would vandalize it as surely
as a vial or two of spray rig marker dye, and the effect on human skin was
only slightly less indelible.
I ate two of them and took the rest to Hazardous Waste Disposal. Say
what you will about healthful local diets giving way to industrial cuisine,
when some of these other guys get into genuine Junk Food the US isn't even
in the same league.
