Fellow Medits: No doubt there have been previous discussions about
scale infestation but frankly, since I didn't see any in my garden, I
didn't pay attention. The weather is glorious and I'm outside fussing
in the garden. I have a couple of the yellow-flowering abutilons up
against the fence as an informal espalier. They are valiently blooming
but didn't look very happy, so I looked closer. OHMIGOD!! Massive
amounts of scale! Some branches look almost like sea coral they are so
enrobed with the stuff. I applied systemic rose care, worked it in and
watered. But Sunset says to use malathion in the spring. Eeewww!
Malathion sounds so toxic, so lethal...do I dare apply this stuff? If
they are so infested, should I pull them out and get rid of them? Does
scale have particular favorite plants or are they equal opportunity
suckers? Appreciate your help!
