Wendy,
Scale on Abutilon is unfortunately one of the drawbacks of Flowering
Maple gardening. Ants are most often the culprit for bringing the scale
so you must control the ants before even thinking about planting
Abutilon. Young scale are susceptable to oil sprayed on them. If you're
plants are small enough you may want to hand pick off all the mature
scale and then spray with a horticultural oil at Summer Rates which are
always described on the bottles label. Systemic granules may work but
since it takes awhile for the chemicals to be absorbed into the plants
vascular system you will need to knock down the population as much as you
can by either the above methods or by spraying something much more toxic
to the scale. Some people give up on Abutilon because of scale, some
constantly battle the pest. Scale love citrus so beware if you have any
lemons or oranges or whatever in your garden.
