I am wondering if anyone can help me find a source for
a shrubby Gordonia species called G. chrysandra. I
have come across several references to this plant
recently, and the first was an award to Jack Osgueda,
a former member of the Cal Hort Society, who won an
award for showing this plant some years ago.
I haven't seen the shrub, but it sounds very similar
to Gordonia axillaris, except it has a longer bloom
season, (perhaps all year round), and is also grown in
northern Italy, the only location where the web
searches led me to this plant. Is anyone growing this
plant, and/or know of sources here in California or
Europe? (I know that the nursery Vivai Torsanlorenzo
outside Rome grows this plant, for those of you in
Europe who might wish to try it as well). I'd be
interested in seed if that is the only way to get it.
I love the quiet elegance of Gordonia axillaris, which
forms a small tree/large shrub in my garden, and
blooms in October thru March with single petal
camellia like blooms which look much like a Matillija
poppy flower. There is a large tree,(30 foot tall),
of this at the UC Botanic Garden on the slope above
the Asian Garden and just past the creek, which is
probably still in bloom. My plant is very much
smaller, even after 10 years in the ground, and is
easily kept at 6 feet tall. The new foliage right now
is an extra bonus, with a soft apricot orange coloring
which contrasts well against the glossy green mature
foliage.
Any local sources would be most appreciated!
