Around
here, we call what the power companies do "utili-pruning"...it makes for some
weird, um, "topiary" shapes at times.
The
local power company used to have a website for choosing plants around power
poles called SafeTree.net, but it's apparently been merged into another tree
selection website, SelecTree: http://selectree.calpoly.edu/. That
website is hosted by my alma mater, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and has a good
database of trees for mediterranean climates. Here's the local power company's
page about choosing trees for near power lines...this might be of help to some
of you, too: http://www.pge.com/myhome/edusafety/diggingyard/planttrees/
Hope
this proves helpful! Anything to avoid more of those poor utili-pruned
trees...
