Thanks for this plant id discussion.
I was visiting my older brother yesterday. He recently had knee surgery and needs to walk but knows he won’t do it on his own. So I go over to walk with him when I can, especially right now when he can’t leave home. We were walking and I saw this big beauty of the Roldana petasitis being discussed here so I stopped to take a photo which I include as an attachment. Neither of us noticed the home owner doing some weeding nearby. She saw me take a photo and she started talking to us. At one point she said “don’t ask me what it is ‘cuz I don’t know!” She was surprised that knew exactly what it was [because of you all] and ran inside to get paper and pencil.
My brother was staring at me funny then said “you sure know a lot more about plants than I thought!” Such an unusual experience for this old dude! Thanks for making it possible!

Thanks to all who have responded. My tardiness in reply is due to some unexpected fallout from our recent “shelter in place” order in the San Francisco Bay Area, not the least of which is helping three octogenarians (one relation, two neighbors) for whom this time has become quite frightening!).
It was so nice to “enter” this virtual circle of like-minded friends to talk about something beside the constant news of the day.

This plant is currently called Roldana petasitis (previously Senecio petasitis). I have this in my garden in the Oroville, CA area and previously in my Davis garden. It’s in full bloom right now and is attractive to bees. It will tolerate a lot of heat (we get temps well over 100F for extended periods during the summer) with only moderate amounts of water if given some shade from the hottest afternoon sun.
